About APOL1-mediated kidney disease
Not all types of kidney disease are caused by diabetes. There is one type, known as APOL1-mediated kidney disease, that is caused by variations in the APOL1 protein. We all have the APOL1 protein; however, some people carry a changed type of APOL1 protein due to DNA variations, which increases the risk to develop chronic kidney disease. This study specifically focuses on people with African ancestry because the risk of having this variation is more common among people with African roots.
Therefore, this study might be of interest for people of African descent, including those identifying as African, Black, Caribbean, Sub-Saharan African, and Latine (Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or South or Central American).
If you think you or your child might have the risk of this variation, consider joining this research study.
Don’t worry if you live further away, travel costs may be reimbursed and there might be the option to do some remote visits.

About research studies
Research studies are an essential part of the medical development process. Only by systematically examining research data, safer and more effective medicines can be developed. Although new therapies are now successfully treating a wide range of diseases, there are still many unmet medical needs. This study has been approved by a country or site Institutional Review Board the committee responsible for ensuring patients are protected.
Participation in research studies is always voluntary. Participation can be cancelled at any time without giving reasons and without any disadvantages for the participant
